Monfils (-3.5) to bt Volandri @1.70
Monfils finally "arrived" big time on ATP tour last year winning a tounament along the way and in my opinion was the biggest improver next to Gasquet and Nadal.
His hard court form is 8-7 at ATP events last year - and similarly, it was 9-3 on hard. Thats solid stuff. The losses came against Youzhny, Robredo and Hrbaty and that is no shame at all. His wins came agaisnt quality players.
On the other hand, Volandri is a classic clay courter. His record last year was 0w-8L - that is just plain bad in anyones language. Don't get carried away with his 2 wins so far in the Doha tourny - they were against Starace and Mahut who have no form to speak of in these conditions. Admitedly, I was pretty shocked to see him beat Davy in straights - but I suspect that Davy had a brain explosion on this occasion as he is prone to do sometimes.
Monfils will try and blow Volandri off the court from the start with his agility and aggressive play which is good for us because Volandri's game tends to fall apart under pressure from past observation.
I also like Monfils mentality, in that when he wins he likes to win big and go on with the job. He has he has beaten so far (Zib and Moodie) by 3 and 4 games respetively. Volandri is nowhere near as good as these guys in these conditions and -3.5 spread looks good.
good luck!
